Salisbury is a city in Rowan County on Interstate 85, just north of the halfway point between Charlotte and Greensboro. Salisbury is home to famed North Carolina soft drink, Cheerwine, and the one-time grocery store powerhouse, Food Lion. Salisbury is the birthplace of former US Senator Elizabeth Dole and current NBA player Bobby Jackson.
Salisbury is the site of a noted prisoner of war camp during the American Civil War and has a large historic home district with many large mansions, several of which are on the National Register of Historic Places.
Major employers in Salisbury include the US headquarters of Food Lion, a regional grocery chain that is the US subsidiary of Delhaize and the W.G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center. Smaller employers include textile mills and other manufacturing businesses.
